Press Release
United Way and Facebook Engage the Digital Community

Dayton, OH, July 10, 2008
- United Way of the Greater Dayton Area is hoping to win $50,000 in grant money by participating in the nationwide United Way Facebook Challenge.  This three-part competition is designed to help United Ways across the country connect with a new generation of donors, advocates and volunteers by utilizing the popular social networking site Facebook as a vehicle to communicate information, share ideas and recruit support for the fall campaign.

The challenge started on June 21, 2008 as part of United Way’s National Day of Action and continues through the end of October.  Phase One – Invite – challenged local United Ways to sign up members for their Facebook Cause, with grant money going to the top three causes with the most members. United Way of the Greater Dayton Area danced between 2nd and 5th place during the competition, finally placing 4th out of more than 45 competitors when things wrapped up on June 28th.

Phase Two – Mobilize – is already underway as United Ways seek to communicate with their Cause members and transform them to champions for change.  Grant money will be awarded to the top six Causes this time, and our local United Way has stayed in the top six since things kicked off on June 29th.  Phase two officially ends on August 31st.

Phase Three – Activate – will begin on September 1st and run through October 31st.  United Ways will have a chance to win up to $35,000 in grant money as they come up with creative and exciting ways to get their Cause members to go out and make an impact on their community.

Individuals who wish to help out in the competition need nothing more than a personal account on Facebook.  To support United Way of the Greater Dayton Area, visit
