United Way Reports 2009 Campaign Results

Dayton, OH, Friday, April 9, 2010
- United Way of the Greater Dayton Area announced today that the 2009 United Way campaign raised $8,507,000.  The total represent 90% of the $9.5 million goal, which was the amount contributed to the 2008 campaign.  Resulting adjustments to agency allocations will be determined by June.

“We knew going in that meeting the goal would be extremely difficult, but it was the right thing to do with the tremendous need in this community” said 2009 Campaign Chair Vince Corrado, Chairman of Shook Construction.  The loss of NCR comprised half of the shortfall.  Continued challenges in key economic sectors combined to be an additional $500,000 that could not be made up in one year.

“It is an economy-driven story,” Corrado said.  “The campaign reflects the new makeup of our community.”  Contributions were up  in the Education, Healthcare, Professional, and Utilities sectors, while Manufacturing and Media were down.  Leadership gifts of $1,000 or more also increased.

Mr. Corrado thanked everyone who contributed and noted some particularly successful employee campaigns among the Top 25 supporters:
•    CareSource, up 7%
•    Cargill, up 9%
•    Dayton Power and Light, up 6%
•    Kettering Health Network, up 10%
•    MeadWestvaco, up 4%
•    Sinclair Community College, up 11%

United Way President Allen Elijah said the local United Way ran a really aggressive campaign under the leadership of Mr. Corrado.  “Not reaching goal was not for lack of trying,” Elijah said.  “A lot of very hard work was done by volunteers and staff, and donors sacrificed to help children and families in need.”

Early on when it became apparent that the local economy was not going to rebound quickly enough to make up for NCR and other losses, Mr. Corrado spearheaded a special initiative to try to close the gap.  That effort resulted in nearly $400,000 towards the final figure.  While the formal campaign is over, volunteers are still working on some final asks that could augment the 2009 effort or set the pace for 2010.

Elijah noted that United Way of the Greater Dayton Area is in the middle of a transformation, while focusing on increased operating efficiencies.  The organization is reducing overhead costs by selling its building soon and went through dramatic staff reductions in 2009, resulting in a $1.5 million reduction in the annual operating budget.

“The tough environment has hurt many fundraising campaigns locally and nationally,” Elijah said.  The local United Way is pulling in top community leaders to help shape a new business model that reflects the realities of the new economy.

“We can never say never on the human needs in this community because they are of such paramount importance to so many lives right now,” Elijah said.
