Why We LIVE UNITED

“United Way allows A Special Wish Foundation, Inc. to full our mission of granting local Miami Valley wishes to children in our community suffering from life-threatening disorders.  The support from United Way of Dayton assists in putting the smiles on the faces of our Dayton wish children and allows dreams to come true.”

Sarah Hill, Fundraising Coordinator, A Special Wish Foundation, Inc.

“Recently, one of our high school students wrote:

'The Boys & Girls Club means a lot to me. They showed me how to be a better person. They showed me to set goals for life. They also helped me get a job. The Boys and Girls Club encouraged me to have good grades, and go out for the basketball team. The Boys & Girls Club is my home.'

This is why our relationship is so vital to what we do at the Boys & Girls Club of Dayton; the resources, the partnership, and the access United Way provides helps us to fulfill our mission.”

“Last year, St. Vincent de Paul served over 75,000 people in our community through our shelters, housing programs, community store, neighborhood conferences and food pantry.  When you give to our community’s United Way, you support local United Way Partner Agencies like us and fund important community resources like United Way’s Volunteer Connection and HelpLink 2-1-1.”

“Three brothers from Fairborn have overcome personal and financial obstacles in their own family situation in order to become scouts.  Their mother insists that they continue in the program because of the positive outcome Cub Scouts has developed in each of their lives.  Blake has grown to overcome problems with his speech and has opened up to the other boys his age in the Cub Scout Pack.  He loves attending meetings, and enjoys reading aloud to his Cub Scout Den.  According to his mom, Cub Scouts is the highlight of his week.  Through Scouts, Blake's brother Brooks has worked out relationship problems involving the separation of his mom and father.  He and his Den Leader have established a bond of trust between each other, because of their shared experience of childhood abandonment by a parent.  Brooks had a very difficult and emotional summer last year, and turned his attitude around during his participation and interaction with others during day camp at Camp Birch in Yellow Springs.  The youngest brother Dallas, completely trusts in his Den Leaders. He strives to catch up to his older brothers, and really comes out of his shell when playing with the other boys in his den.”

“In a small community like Xenia, we have limited access to public transportation.  As a result, I have relied on the senior center to provide me transportation services on numerous occasions.  The Center has wheel-chair equipped vans that will take me around town, as well as to my out-of-town appointments.  I do not have anyone else to take me to my doctor’s appointments so I am very grateful to the Center because they always fit me into their schedule.  I know the Center receives money from the United Way to help with its transportation costs and I am very grateful.”

“My brother goes to dialysis three days a week.  My husband and I are not able to take him because we have to work.  If my brother didn’t get his dialysis treatments he would die.  The Center picks my brother up, takes him to his treatments and then returns to bring him back home.  The drivers are very courteous and come to the door to help my brother to and from the van.  We make donations as we can to the Center, but I know it is much more costly to provide the service.  I am thankful to United Way for helping make the services available.”

“Our Center receives funding from the United Way to support our Transportation and Outreach Programs.  We serve all of the aging in Greene County.  Our employees know how important the United Way is both to our Center and to the Miami Valley as a whole.  We have a United Way campaign here and each year exceed our goal from the year before.  This is with a minimally paid, small workforce of only 6 full-time employees.  I believe the employees support the campaign so well each year because they see what it does for the aging in our community.  We traveled over 150,000 miles last year, taking individuals to important medical appointments and treatments.  Some of the individuals have no other means of transportation.  We also do other outreach services, such as assessments of individuals to determine their needs, information and referral, home delivered meals, and many other services.  United Way funding is crucial to our mission and to delivering the services our aging need.

“In this time of uncertainty, those affected by home fires can count on one thing: That Red Cross volunteers will drive to the scene to provide comfort, food, clothing and shelter.  United Way dollars help keep those trucks rolling.

“United Way funds give the Red Cross opportunities to educate our community about preparedness.  A few years ago, ‘Brenda’ attended a free demonstration of life saving techniques.  Later that day, while watching a movie, her granddaughter started choking on a piece of candy.  Remembering the Red Cross talk, she turned her granddaughter upside down and started beating on her back.  After what seemed like an eternity, the candy loudly popped out of the child’s mouth…to this day, in the grandmother’s words, ‘the sweetest sound I have ever heard.’

“Before you can help a family in crisis, you must help that family stay together.  Thanks to United Way funds, the Red Cross houses a few hundred families every year, helping plan their recovery and their future.”

Tom Fodor, Chief Executive Officer, American Red Cross, Dayton Area Chapter
